Term 2010 through 2013

Trip Bates

Please allow me to take a minute and introduce myself.  My name is Trip Bates.  I am a loving father and husband with a passion for barbeque.  I was one of the founding members of the Saint Louis Barbeque Society.  I am the pit master for the Award Winning Smoking Fine Swine Competitive Barbeque team.  We have been competing at a competitors level for the last several years.  I have held the position of Charity and Benefits on the Board of Directors since the conception of the SLBS.  My position on the Board of Directors is up for renewal for a new three-year term and I am announcing my intention to run again for the Board of Directors in the SLBS.  I feel that I have so much more to offer the Membership and the Board by giving new ideas and support to help the society grow.  I feel that we have came a long way with the SLBS since day one and we have a long way still to go and I would like to be a part of the process.    It is a pleasure to be involved with a group of people that have the same passions that my family and I have and to have a desire to see the SLBS grow and become hugely successful.  With this said I Trip Bates except the nomination for ballet to the Board of Directors of the Saint Louis Barbeque Society.

I’ve been grilling for years.  Started with gas, moved to charcoal, and onto lump wood.  I have competed in the BBQ circuit for just over 3 years.  I am a member of the Award Winning ASAP team.  Our biggest win was in Little Rock, Arkansas, at Smoke on the Water.  We competed against the big guys, they were the guys we read about and see on TV.  We took 20th in Pulled Pork and 1st place in Brisket, placing us 18th overall, out of 129 teams.  We started competing with 9 Weber Kettles, and currently cook on Weber Kettles, The Big Green Egg,  Hasty Bake, and Backwoods Smokers.  I am a certified judge for both SLBS and KCBS.
I would like to serve on the SLBS Board to promote outdoor cooking in the St. Louis Area.  The event we did in the park for  Lucy Saunders, author  of Grilling with Beer,  was a great event to promote both the book and the St. Louis BBQ Society.  Several of us cooked items from her books, showing  the variety of foods that can be cooked  not only with beer, but on grills.  Why not work with publishers and do the same thing with other cooking and grilling books?  We could do this at book stores, malls, grill  and hardware stores,  parks or TV shows. I love Frank, but there are other stores in the city that sell grills.  Do their customers know about the St. Louis BBQ Society?  Let’s spread the word around the all of the St. Louis area.   The fundraising we do is great, but we need to get more members involved.  We need reasons for people to go to the website or mass emailing to inform the members we have something going on and need their help.  It sounds like the BBQ sales outside office buildings are more profitable, because there are more people in the building.  Let’s do more of those.  Get the people involved that are asking for our help.  Let them help us find an office building or more populated area, pass out fliers, help with the event, along side of members. The St. Louis BBQ Society is in its infancy, the board members need to attend meeting and participate in the fundraising and sanctioned events  If you are going to serve on the SLBS Board, I think you should be involved, otherwise, get out of the way and let those that are willing get things done. I have participated in the fundraising events and  cooked and served for a judging class. I am a person that takes on a job and gets it done to the best of my abilities.  God has bless me with many abilities and I am on a mission to share my gifts.  I am great at planning things out and seeing them through. I like to get others involved in projects and am not afraid to ask for help.  I am an honest, hard working, talented individual that would like to be more involved in the SLBS, and would appreciate your vote.

Thank you.
Mary

George Wilson

Dear STL BBQ Society Board,

My name is George Wilson and I would like join the Board of Directors for the St. Louis BBQ Society.
I first learned to grill with my dad; we spend many nights cooking dinner on the Weber kettle grill.  I felt that it was a great experience and a great way to spend time between a father and son.  I would like for other fathers and sons to have the same memories and joy that I had.  Now that I have grown up, well at least moved out of the house, and I now grill for myself.  Cooking has always brought me pleasure; whether it is on the grill, smoker, stove, or oven.  I would like to spread new ideas and recipes to others in St. Louis; being on the board would help me achieve this goal.

I first got started with BBQ competitions and actually smoking meat with the Pigs Gone Wild BBQ Team.  I have been to several evens with them and found that the commonalities of all of them are good people, good fun and great food.  Participating in these events has led to two new hobbies if you will; smoking the meat as opposed to grilling, and the design of BBQ pits.  I would like to learn to prefect my technique for smoking all types of meat.   To do so I would like to design my own smoker; I am always amazed at the grills that people construct for these competitions.   I like to study their grills and see why they made them the way they did.  The ultimate goal would be to take what I fell is the best aspects of all the grills I see and combine them to make a smoker that is the best out there.  Granted I don’t think it will be the “best” for I have found that everyone has their own unique style of BBQing.  It is these unique styles that help lead to new and amazing recipes that can be enjoyed and shared with all.

I feel that if I am able to become a member of the board for the St. Louis BBQ society, I will be able to help and bring new ideas to boost the interested in BBQ in the St. Louis area.  I’m young and energetic; I would be able to bring a perspective of the younger generations to the board.  Since I have grown up with computers, I would be able to utilize my skills of web site design and all Microsoft programs to help out with promotions and other functions necessary to the success of the BBQ Society.  I have always thought of myself as a creative person; I will be able to bring creative ideas to the website and to events that the St. Louis BBQ society hosts.  Charity events are always a great way to help increase ones standing with the community; I will be able to help plan functions and work events to spread the reach of the St. Louis BBQ Society.  I have always loved food and will always love food; I feel that it is a great way to bring family and friends together.  Cooking has always brought people together, especially good BBQ; I would like to join the board to help increase the popularity of BBQ, thus bring more people together to share in the good times and fun memories.

Thank you,

George Wilson
